A NEW SPECTRUM OF EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

Spectra Secondary School

Spectra Secondary School, became the second specialised school for Normal (Technical) students students in Singapore in January 2014. The school provides a customised and practice-oriented curriculum to suit the learning needs of its students. Working closely with the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and industry partners to develop programmes and attachment opportunities, it has become a beacon in providing alternative education pathways for better outcomes.

CHALLENGE

The challenge for Activiste was to work with the school board and pioneer faculty to envision what its brand would represent, and for this to shape the education experience. The principal of the new school wanted a brand exercise which synthesised and crystallised a vision for the school that would resonate with the board, teachers, staff of the new school as well as its potential students.

To debunk the notion that NT students were not academically inclined, we developed a brand proposition which leverages the school’s aim to nurture, develop the diverse interests and strengths of these students and to provide an educational experience which is enriching and builds their self-esteem.

SOLUTION

Activiste designed and facilitated an engaging visioning workshop over two half days involving core team members of Spectra, and the Board Directors. It involved both plenary sessions and breakout groups designed to stimulate participants into thinking and sharing ideas. Whilst the core purpose was to develop a vision, mission and values for the school, a secondary and no less important goal was to create a big idea which would be immediately understandable and would shape the culture of Spectra.

IMPACT

“Together We Can” exemplifies the “kampung” spirit of togetherness and collective effort of Spectra. It signals their commitment to working with parents and partners (community and industry) to nurture and develop  students. Today, it is a close-knit community with a sense of shared purpose - well on its way to becoming a self-sustaining and nurturing eco-system that brings out the best in those who work, study and play there.

“The sessions generated many ideas and key themes. Thanks to your energetic and skilful facilitation, all our staff and board members were highly involved and engaged. An unplanned but excellent spill over effect of the sessions was the rapport and connection that happened between and amongst board members and teachers."
